The first 667 words: greetings, numbers, time, family, food, places, and the verbs and adjectives of every day. Many are still written in kana at this level, and that is fine: learn the word first, the kanji will follow.

There is no official list: the JLPT stopped publishing one in 2010. This is Jonathan Waller's list, the one most study sites use, with readings and meanings from JMdict. A word on an earlier level's list is not repeated here.
