Grammar N3敬語

Keigo

Keigo is the respectful register: polite forms (です・ます), respectful forms that raise the other person (尊敬語), and humble forms that lower yourself (謙譲語). You will hear it in shops and at work long before you need to produce it.

Three layers

丁寧語 (teineigo) is the polite です・ます you learn first. 尊敬語 (sonkeigo) describes what the other person does, with respect. 謙譲語 (kenjōgo) describes what you do for them, humbly. Same verb, three forms.

  • 食べます・召し上がります・いただきます

    Reading: たべます・めしあがります・いただきます

Eat: polite, respectful (you eat), humble (I eat).

  • 行きます・いらっしゃいます・参ります

    Reading: いきます・いらっしゃいます・まいります

    Go: polite, respectful, humble.

  • 言います・おっしゃいます・申します

    Reading: いいます・おっしゃいます・もうします

    Say: polite, respectful, humble.

What you hear every day

Shop staff speak to you in keigo; you answer in plain polite form. Knowing these phrases is enough to feel at home.

  • いらっしゃいませ。

Welcome. (Shops and restaurants. You do not answer it.)

  • 少々お待ちください。

    Reading: しょうしょうおまちください。

    One moment, please.

  • こちらでお召し上がりですか?

    Reading: こちらでおめしあがりですか?

    Will you be eating here?

Making your own

Regular verbs follow patterns: お + stem + になる for respect (お読みになる), お + stem + する for humility (お持ちします). The special verbs above replace the pattern. Nouns take お or ご: お名前, ご住所.

  • お名前をお伺いしてもよろしいですか?

    Reading: おなまえをおうかがいしてもよろしいですか?

    May I ask your name?

  • 荷物をお持ちします。

    Reading: にもつをおもちします。

    I'll carry your bag.
