い and な adjectives
Japanese adjectives come in two kinds. い-adjectives conjugate on their own, almost like verbs; な-adjectives behave like nouns and lean on だ or です.
Before a noun
い-adjectives go straight before the noun: 高い山. な-adjectives take な: 静かな町.
At the end of a sentence the な goes away, and both can take です.
高い山
Reading: たかいやま
A tall mountain.
静かな町
Reading: しずかなまち
A quiet town.
この町は静かです。
Reading: このまちはしずかです。
This town is quiet. (No な at the end.)
い-adjectives: negative and past
Drop the final い and add くない for the negative, かった for the past, くなかった for the past negative. For polite speech add です: 高くないです, 高かったです, 高くなかったです.
いい is the one exception: it conjugates from よい, so よくない, よかった.
高い・高くない・高かった・高くなかった
Reading: たかい・たかくない・たかかった・たかくなかった
Expensive, not expensive, was expensive, was not expensive.
昨日は寒かったです。
Reading: きのうはさむかったです。

いい・よくない・よかった・よくなかった
Good, not good, was good, was not good. Never いくない.
な-adjectives: like nouns
な-adjectives conjugate like nouns, with だ: 静かだ, 静かじゃない, 静かだった, 静かじゃなかった. Polite: 静かです, 静かじゃないです, 静かでした, 静かじゃなかったです.
Two traps end in い but are な-adjectives: きれい (pretty, clean) and 嫌い (disliked). So it is きれいな花, and きれいじゃない, never きれくない.
静かだ・静かじゃない・静かだった・静かじゃなかった
Reading: しずかだ・しずかじゃない・しずかだった・しずかじゃなかった
Quiet, not quiet, was quiet, was not quiet.

Reading: へやはきれいじゃない。
The room is not clean. (きれい is a な-adjective.)

Reading: やさいがきらいです。
I don't like vegetables. (嫌い is a な-adjective too: 嫌いな食べ物.)
Linking two adjectives
For "and" between adjectives, い-adjectives change い to くて and な-adjectives take で. The last one carries the tense.
安くて美味しい店
Reading: やすくておいしいみせ
A cheap, tasty restaurant.
この部屋は静かで明るいです。
Reading: このへやはしずかであかるいです。
This room is quiet and bright.
天気がよくて、暖かかった。
Reading: てんきがよくて、あたたかかった。
