Verb conjugation
Every Japanese verb belongs to one of three groups, and the group tells you how it conjugates. Spot the group and the dictionary, ます, ない and た forms follow a pattern.
Three groups
う-verbs (godan) end in う, く, ぐ, す, つ, ぬ, ぶ, む or る: 書く, 飲む, 話す, 買う. る-verbs (ichidan) end in an i or e sound plus る, and simply drop the る: 見る, 食べる. Two verbs are irregular: する (to do) and 来る (to come).
The group decides every ending, so it is the first thing to learn about a new verb.
書く・飲む・話す
Reading: かく・のむ・はなす
Write, drink, speak: う-verbs.
食べる・見る・起きる
Reading: たべる・みる・おきる
Eat, see, get up: る-verbs.
する・来る
Reading: する・くる
Do, come: the two irregulars.
The る-ending traps
Every る-verb ends in an i or e sound plus る, but not every verb that does is a る-verb. 帰る, 入る, 走る, 知る and 切る look like る-verbs and conjugate as う-verbs. The ない form gives them away: 帰らない, never 帰ない.
帰る・帰ります・帰らない
Reading: かえる・かえります・かえらない
Go home: dictionary, ます, ない. A う-verb, despite the える.
着る・着ます・着ない
Reading: きる・きます・きない
Wear: a る-verb. Compare 切る (cut): 切ります, 切らない.
Four forms to start with
The dictionary form is the plain present; ます is the polite present; ない is the plain negative; た is the plain past.
る-verbs drop る and add the ending. う-verbs move their last sound: to the i row before ます, to the a row before ない (う becomes わ: 買わない). The た form follows the sound changes of the て form.
食べる・食べます・食べない・食べた
Reading: たべる・たべます・たべない・たべた
Eat (a る-verb): drop る, add the ending.
書く・書きます・書かない・書いた
Reading: かく・かきます・かかない・かいた
Write (a う-verb): the i row for ます, the a row for ない, いた for the past.
買う・買います・買わない・買った
Reading: かう・かいます・かわない・かった
Buy: う becomes わ before ない, never あ.
The two irregulars
する and 来る follow no pattern, but there are only two. する also builds hundreds of verbs from nouns: 勉強する (study), 電話する (call). 来る keeps its kanji and changes its reading: くる, きます, こない, きた.
する・します・しない・した
Do: dictionary, ます, ない, た.
来る・来ます・来ない・来た
Reading: くる・きます・こない・きた
Come: the kanji stays, the reading changes.
勉強します・勉強しない・勉強した
Reading: べんきょうします・べんきょうしない・べんきょうした
Study: a noun plus する conjugates just like する.
