Finished, or ruined

て-form + しまう adds one of two feelings: the action is completely done, or it happened and you wish it had not. In speech it shrinks to ちゃう / じゃう.

Finished, completely

Doing something to the end, often faster or more thoroughly than expected.

  • 全部食べてしまった。

    Reading: ぜんぶたべてしまった。

    I ate it all. (Every last bit.)

  • 宿題はもうやってしまいました。

    Reading: しゅくだいはもうやってしまいました。

    I have already finished the homework.

Oops

Something happened that you did not mean, or that you regret. The most common use in daily life.

  • 鍵をなくしてしまった。

    Reading: かぎをなくしてしまった。

    I lost my keys. (And I am not happy about it.)

  • 寝坊してしまって、遅れました。

    Reading: ねぼうしてしまって、おくれました。

    I overslept and was late.

  • 言ってしまった。

    Reading: いってしまった。

    I said it. (And I can't take it back.)

Casual: ちゃう, じゃう

てしまう becomes ちゃう, でしまう becomes じゃう. Same meaning, relaxed: 食べちゃった, 読んじゃった. Constant among friends.

  • ケーキ、食べちゃった。

    Reading: ケーキ、たべちゃった。

    I ate the cake. (Sorry. Or: all of it.)

  • 忘れちゃった。

    Reading: わすれちゃった。

    I forgot.
