Place particles
Three particles for place. に: where something is or where it ends up. で: where an action happens. へ: the direction you head in. The difference is what the verb does.
に: existence and arrival
With いる and ある (there is), and with verbs of arriving, entering and putting: the place is a destination or the location of a state, not of an action.
東京に住んでいます。
Reading: とうきょうにすんでいます。
I live in Tokyo.
机の上に本がある。
Reading: つくえのうえにほんがある。
There is a book on the desk.
駅に着いた。
Reading: えきについた。
I arrived at the station.
で: where the action takes place
If something is done, happens or is performed somewhere, that place takes で. Also the means: バスで (by bus), 日本語で (in Japanese).
図書館で勉強する。
Reading: としょかんでべんきょうする。
I study at the library.
公園で遊んだ。
Reading: こうえんであそんだ。
We played in the park.
バスで行きます。
Reading: バスでいきます。
I'll go by bus.
へ: towards
Direction of movement. With verbs of going, へ and に are mostly interchangeable; へ leans on the journey, に on the destination. Written へ, read "e".
日本へ行きたい。
Reading: にほんへいきたい。
I want to go to Japan.
家へ帰る途中で、雨が降り出した。
Reading: いえへかえるとちゅうで、あめがふりだした。
On the way home, it started to rain.
